Obituary for Gene Sheppard
Gene Sheppard was born in Houston, Texas, on November 22, 1932, to the late Henry Cecil “Bunk” Sheppard and Margie Ann Melton Sheppard. Gene dedicated his life to God, his family, and law enforcement. He joined the Navy in 1950, serving in the Korean War and received numerous honors – The China Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, Korean Service Ribbon (One Star) and the National Defense Service Medal. He received an honorable discharge in 1953.
After his Navy service he became a Houston Police officer where he served for 25 years and retired in 1981. After a short-lived retirement, he became the Deputy Sheriff of Foard County, Texas, and later became Sheriff. Throughout the years Gene served in many capacities in the law enforcement communities of Kingman County, Kansas, Wilbarger County, Texas, and Hardeman County, Texas, then settling in Athens and retiring from Henderson County, Texas, in 2002.
Gene is preceded in death by his loving wife Doris Jean Wardell, after 53 years of marriage, one daughter Tina Michele Woodbridge, his brother Donald Sheppard and his sister Arleta Shelton. Survivors include son Brad Sheppard and wife Lisa, Bella Vista, Arkansas; daughter LeAnn Setliff and husband Steve of Lubbock, Texas; daughter Stacey Sheppard of Athens, Texas; daughter Tricia Luedtke and husband George of Midlothian, Texas; daughter Cyndi Acton and husband Bruce of Kellyville, Oklahoma; brother Charles Sheppard, of Abilene, Texas, twin sister June Cobb of Alpine, Texas, and brother Hank Sheppard of Houston, Texas; 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Gene and Doris both dedicated many hours of service to their church family at Eastern Hills Church of Christ wherever there was a call.
